NEW YORK -- The Reverend Billy Graham, a Christian evangelist who counseled presidents for decades, has passed away at the age of 99.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan had words of praise for Graham. He said he was a man of goodness who kept his message and prayers easy to understand.

"They were direct, they were simple, they were sincere, and they were uncomplicated," he said.

His eminence said Graham was a great communicator, and knew to rely on the bible to give his followers guidance and comfort -- so much of that is needed today.

"We need somebody like him today, don't we? When you look at a tragedy like we went through last week in Florida, you're saying I wish there was somebody that could come up and speak with the solemnity, the sincerity of a Billy Graham and bring us together," Dolan said.

Graham had been treated for cancer and pneumonia, among other ailments in recent years.
