NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Brooklyn building that housed a fitness center collapsed Wednesday afternoon, injuring one man, officials said.

Emergency personnel responded to the three-story building on Court Street in Carroll Gardens, at the intersection of Union Street, around 4:45 p.m., the FDNY said.

One man suffered a minor injury, the FDNY and a spokesman for the city's Department of Buildings said. It wasn't immediately clear where he was when the building collapsed.

Firefighters at the scene could be seen searching through rubble at the site. Debris from the building landed on several cars parked nearby.

The first floor of the building was home to Body Elite Gym, photos taken prior to the collapse show. The fitness center, which was closed at the time of the collapse, was in the process of getting an “exterior makeover,” according to its Facebook page.

The Department of Buildings issued a partial stop work order at the site on June 10, records show. A brick masonry wall at the site was “dangerously bulging” over the sidewalk, the department said. Construction workers were carrying out “masonry demolition” at the site before the department issued the stop work order, according to its records.

A DOB spokesman on Wednesday told 1010 WINS that the department's structural engineers determined the remains of the building were not in danger of collapsing any further. However, the DOB is monitoring the south wall of the building, which didn't collapse, out of an abundance of caution.

The department has issued an order for the full demolition of the building's remains, the spokesman said. The property's owners will also be required to build a construction fence around it.

All of the neighboring building's occupants will have to vacate the premises until the collapsed building site is safe, the spokesman added. The DOB's investigation is ongoing.
