CHICAGO (1010 WINS) -- They have 'tremendous regret.'

That's the word coming from two brothers who allegedly took part in what police say was a staged attack on Jussie Smollett, orchestrated by the actor.

Their attorney said they understand how their actions have impacted people across the nation, particularly and especially those who have been victims of hate crimes themselves.

"They understand how it has impacted people across the nation, particularly minority communities and especially those who have been victims of hate crimes themselves," said Gloria Schmidt, an attorney for the brothers Olabinjo and Abimbola Osundairo.

Smollett faces a felony charge of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Smollett took "advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career."

The brothers are cooperating with police and are not facing prosecution.
