NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man who fatally stabbed a 6-year-old boy and nearly killed the boy's 7-year-old best friend inside an elevator in 2014 was sentenced Tuesday.

Daniel St. Hubert, a homeless man dubbed the "Brooklyn Ripper," for stabbing the children a total of 27 times, was given 50 years to life in prison for the stabbing death of Prince Joshua "PJ" Avitto. PJ's friend, Mikayla Capers, was also stabbed 16 times. She survived the attack and testified in court.

Capers was 7 at the time of the attack. She and Avitto were playing outside the Boulevard Houses in East New York and headed into the elevator when they were followed, then brutally attacked, by Hubert.

Mikayla, now 11, bravely asked the judge to sentence St. Hubert to the most time in prison and the judge complied. She said at first she didn't want to speak in court but changed her mind for her friend PJ, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

"If I wasn't brave for P.J., the man would never have been put away," Mikayla said.

Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez called her testimony was courageous and said she helped put her attacker behind bars.

Gonzalez also says he hopes Mikayla and PJ's loved ones find some solace in the conviction.

Mikayla says she never wants to see St. Hubert's face again, D'Auria reported.
