Brooklyn legislator wants residents to get some Verrazano discount as Staten Islanders

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) Staten Island residents get a break on tolls on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge while Brooklyn residents don’t.

Democratic State Senator Andrew Gounardes of Bay Ridge believes that’s not fair.

The cash toll on the bridge is $19, $12.24 with EZ Pass, but Staten Islanders who cross at least three times a month pay just $5.50 per crossing.

“What we’re proposing to do is to say, that anyone who is regularly commuting into Staten Island, for whatever purpose, 10 times or more a month, should be eligible to receive a discount, similar to the discount that exists for Staten Island residents who are travelling off the island to get elsewhere into the city,” said Gounardes.

Opponents say lowering the toll for Brooklynites would encourage more traffic and they say that sends the wrong message in the age of congestion pricing.
