NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The search is on for a hit-and-run driver who left a father dead and another person seriously injured early Sunday.

Authorities and witnesses say the vehicle struck the man at the corner of Park Place and Albany Avenue in Crown Heights just after 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

The injured person was taken to Interfaith Hospital with serious injuries.

A witness named Thomas was still shaken up when he spoke with 1010 WINS reporter Roger Stern. He said he heard a loud boom then saw the man who was hit.

“I’m running down the middle of the street. I see something. I get a little closer. It’s a body,” he said.

Police say 30-year-old Kassim Mathews was killed in the hit-and-run crash.

Althea Ohara-Thurston, Mathews' mother in law, says he was a father of three.

Ohara-Thurston told ABC7 that she was in “total disbelief.”

"It's too much right now, I can't believe it. I've got to know, I don't know what's going on," she said.

Thomas said he saw a silver sedan speed away from the scene and then immediately called 911.

“It’s traumatizing me,” he said. “That’s all I can see right now is him laying on the floor. And I just hear that boom.”

Thomas said it wasn’t the first time someone was injured on the street.

“They always speed down Albany Avenue. I was hit on this block once too when I was little,” he said.

He said he knew who the victim was: “He’s a good man. He go to work every day. He take care of his kids.”
