Brooklyn DA throwing out thousands of low-level pot summonses

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- More than 3,000 low-level pot summonses were dismissed through a new program from the Brooklyn DA.

Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez said as part of his decision to stop prosecuting low-level marijuana cases, he felt compelled to review cases where summonses were already issued and the person may have a warrant for not paying them.

"It makes absolutely no sense for us to have the police department arrest them, drag them to court, for me then to dismiss it," he said.

At Lenox Road Baptist Church on Friday and Saturday, a special court was set up for anyone with low level summonses to have their case dismissed. Even those who were arrested and convicted can have their case considered.

"Clearing them, and it's the only conviction they have, clearing them will allow them to trul begin again and have a clean, fresh start in life," he said.
