NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police said that a building in Brooklyn collapsed after a driver crashed straight into it Monday night.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. as an out-of-control driver flew into a two-story building at 496 Avenue P near East 5th Street in Midwood.

The building consisted of a closed convenience store and a second-floor apartment where four or five people normally resided, but no one was home.

The building crumpled into a pile and is now being removed piece by piece

A 20-year-old driver is in custody after trying to run from the crash, authorities say, and charges are pending.

Nobody was injured.

FDNY Assistant Chief Wayne Cartwright sadi, “We are going to remain on the scene, with multiple agencies, including the NYPD, Buildings and OEM, awaiting heavy equipment that will come in this morning to remove the debris and to attempt to make the situation as safe as possible.”
