NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Another New York City hospital has settled with the state for illegally billing sex assault victims for rape exams.

State Attorney General Letitia James made the announcement, saying Bronx Healthcare Systems will reimburse the cost, and must come up with a new written policy, so this doesn't happen again.

“The trauma of sexual assault is more than enough for a survivor to bear,” said James. “The secondary trauma of fighting an illegal bill for a forensic rape exam is unfathomable, and we will not allow it to continue.”

The settlement marks the 9th of its kind, the first was with the Brooklyn Medical Center in 2017.

James said BronxCare will create a written policy that prevents the future billing of rape victims, and will make restitution to women who were charged between Jan 2016 and December 2017.
