Bodies Of Missing L.I. Father, Son Found In Car In Virginia

June 06, 2018 - 4:00 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The search for a missing boy ended in tragedy Wednesday.

Suffolk County police had been looking for 43-year-old John Ligurgo III and his son 2-year-old Jovani Ligurgo after Ligurgo failed to return the boy to his mother Tuesday afternoon.

Ligurgo's condo was also set on fire Tuesday.

Police tracked Ligurgo's Jeep crossing the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey earlier and police said Ligurgo may have had a hunting rifle.

A car matching Ligurgo's turned up in Rockbridge, Virginia with two dead occupants inside, police said.

The pair were missing since 4 p.m. Tuesday but an AMBER Alert was not issued.

A neighbor who knew the boy and his older brother called the news of his tragic death "despicable."

Many are questioning why an AMBER Alert was not issued.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said they followed all proper protocol and contacted New York police to issued an AMBER Alert, but New York declined.
