Plastic Straw

Bill Would Ban Plastic Drinking Straws In New York City Businesses

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Call it the last straw. The city council is moving to ban plastic straws at businesses in the city -- that includes plastic coffee stirrers.

Bill from Manhattan has used paper straws and says it's better than polluting the ocean.

"I don't wanna see em floating out in the sea, why not? All the stuffs already there, so why keep doing it?" he said.

That's the reason the bill's sponsors are pushing for the ban. They say plastic straws are hard to recycle and other cities -- like Miami Beach and Seattle -- have already banned them.

Costas is a restaurant and food truck owner and said the cost really isn't a factor. He'd like to see the city go even further.

"What I would love to see is banning styrofoam," he said.

The city already attempted that and has faced legal challenges from the industry, it's not clear whether this ban will face the same opposition.
