Try Getting a Straight Answer From Bill Belichick About Greg Schiano's Sudden Patriots Exit

FOXBORO (WEEI.com) -- A few weeks ago, Greg Schiano announced he was leaving the New England Patriots organization before he really even started as defensive coordinator to focus on his family and faith.

Bill Belichick released a statement along with Schiano's supporting the decision, but didn't give any insight beyond that, including how his departure would impact the team.

Speaking at his pre-draft press conference Wednesday, the Patriots coach was asked about Schiano's departure and how it might affect things.

"We're not talking about an unprecedented event here," Belichick said. "We've dealt with changes before and we'll continue to deal with them."

A follow-up question asked whether the team has any plans to replace Schiano. Nice try.

"You mean relative to the 2019 draft? We'll kind of stick to the draft for right now, but I appreciate the question," Belichick said. "I really appreciate you asking."

Belichick did admit assistant coaches have been less active in the pre-draft process this year because there has been so much turnover on the staff, which includes Brian Flores and Josh Boyer going to Miami and Brendan Daly to Kansas City.

The Patriots only have safeties coach Steve Belichick and Jerod Mayo (reportedly linebackers coach) on staff for the defense. Bret Bielema likely will fit in somewhere as well.
