Big Stretch Of Broadway Goes Car-Free For Earth Day

April 21, 2018 - 12:20 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Earth Day celebrations were underway early in New York with part of Broadway declared a 'car free' zone.

"It's fun, I like to salsa," Alejandro said.

He was one of those brave enough to dance salsa in Herald Square as part of the city's celebration of Car-Free Day.

Clarence and his almost 3-year-old son got into the groove too.

"He was, ya know I was twirling him, and he really got right into it. We didn't take any lessons or anything, we were really kind of winging it," he said.

There are festivities up and down a 30 block stretch Broadway all the way up to Harlem at 182nd Street. You can bring an outgrown children's bike and swap it for the correct size and also receive a brand new helmet courtesy of the DOT.

Earth Day is officially recognized on April 22.
