ALBANY, NY (1010 WINS/AP) -- Gay conversion therapy was the focus in Albany, as the New York State Senate votes to ban it.

The legislation would prohibit therapists from trying to change a minor's sexual orientation. There are similar laws on the books in fourteen states.

The measure has passed New York's Democrat-controlled Assembly, but has faced opposition in the Senate, until Democrats took over following November's election.

The legislation's sponsor, Sen. Brad Hoylman, tells The Associated Press that it is essential that the state send the message that conversion therapy is harmful and that a person's sexual orientation is not a disorder that needs treatment.
The Senate will also consider legislation prohibiting discrimination based on a person's gender identity.
