Babylon home collapses into backyard after hydraulic jack fails

BABYLON, NY (1010 WINS) -- A house on Coppertree Lane in Babylon is sitting at an odd angle after collapsing as it was being elevated on Friday morning.

Raising houses has been routine in Babylon since Sandy struck, so neighbor Tom Coletti didn't think much of it until he heard a very loud noise.

"I heard a thunderous boom. It sounded like a tree went down," he said.

The whole house toppled into the backyard. A hydraulic jack lifting it onto its new foundation had failed.

Village building inspector Stephen Fellman said it's the second time this has happened while lifting a house with no first floor beams onto its foundation, and he has a theory.

"You don't have a nice tight box that you're lifting, you have a box with our walls that are hanging in the air. So I think the load points then become very tricky," he said.

The home's owner said he's just happy nobody was hurt.
