NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Some help is on the way for animal shelters and pet owners during the coronavirus crisis.

The ASPCA is donating $5 million in grants to shelters in certain states to help people who don't have the money to buy pet food.

The grant includes a food distribution center in New York City as well as well Miami and Los Angeles.

A chunk of that money will also help shelters with their basic operations including veterinary services.

Animal shelters across the country have had to cancel adoption events and trim staffing since social distancing policies and stay home orders are in effect to help slow the spread of coronavirus. Therefore, shelters are urging people to foster animals right now if they can.
