NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Due to a massive spike in infections, people who have recently left New York City should self-quarantine for 14 days, the White House said Tuesday.

New York City is the epicenter of the outbreak with nearly 15,000 total coronavirus cases and 131 deaths.

"Everybody who was in New York should be self-quarantining for the next 14 days to ensure the virus doesn’t spread to others no matter where they have gone, whether it’s Florida, North Carolina or out to far reaches of Long Island," said Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator. "We’re starting to see new cases across Long Island that suggest people have left the city."

Mayor Bill De Blasio also said he fears April will be worse than March and that May could be worse than that as cases continue to climb. He said in a matter of weeks or even days hospitals are going to be stretched to the limit.

"Our hospitals, bluntly, are going to go broke," de Blasio said, emphasizing the importance of the stimulus bill making its way through Congress.
