The footage in Schenectady prompted a protest outside the police department on Monday, the same day Yugeshwar Gaindarpersaud, 31, was arrested for allegedly slashing the tires of a neighbor’s car.

Police charged Gaindarpersaud with resisting arrest and criminal mischief, WRGB reported.

His father, Jaindra Gaindarpersaud, filmed an officer kneeling on his son’s neck, and can be heard yelling in the video, “What he’s done to you?”

Gaindarpersaud told the Times-Union he blacked out under the pressure of the officer’s knee and woke up at the hospital.

Schenectady police said an officer responded to a complaint at a home on Monday that a neighbor had damaged the tires of a vehicle and that the person calling had surveillance video supporting that accusation.

The officer questioned Gaindarpersaud, who the police said, moved to the back yard where the officer chased him, lost his radio, and then asked for a bystander to call 911 for assistance arresting Gaindarpersaud.

The police department posted on Facebook that its Office of Professional Standards was reviewing footage showing the arrest and that it was “committed to fair, impartial, and transparent investigations.”

Police have not released the name of the officer visible in the footage.
