Snake blamed for power outage at New Jersey hotel

April 21, 2019 - 3:19 pm

MAWHAH, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities say they have found an unlikely culprit for a power outage that struck a New Jersey hotel a week ago: a snake.

The North Jersey Record reports that a 3-foot-long snake got into an underground electrical box on the property of the Sheraton Mahwah last Monday.

Orange & Rockland spokeswoman Sophia Salas says the snake triggered an outage shortly after 11 a.m. that lasted for more than four hours.

Power was restored at 3:25 p.m., but Salas says the snake did not survive. There was no immediate word on what kind of snake it was.

Salas said no one was evacuated from the hotel, which was the only property affected.
