Search continues for toddler after Amber Alert canceled

SODUS, N.Y. (AP) — The search continues for a missing toddler whose mother was found buried on an upstate New York farm, despite the cancellation of an Amber Alert.

Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts said Tuesday that authorities are still looking for 14-month-old Owen Hidalgo-Calderon even though state police administratively cancelled the alert. It was issued May 25, two days after searchers found the body of 18-year-old Guatemala native Selena Hidalgo-Calderon.

Sheriff's officials say the mother's boyfriend, Ebavardo Gutierrez Reyes, admits burying Hidalgo-Calderon's body — but not killing her.

Reyes was in court Tuesday on a related evidence tampering charge. He was represented by public defender Andrew Correia, who declined to comment except to say he waived a preliminary hearing.

Immigration officials say Reyes is from Mexico and is in the country illegally.
