ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) -- Police say a man who showed up at Ithaca's police headquarters and abruptly attacked a sergeant with a butcher knife has been shot and killed.

Police Chief Dennis Nayor says 57-year-old Michael DeCastro rang to be buzzed into the police station lobby around 6:30 a.m. and quickly lashed out at the sergeant who answered the door.

Nayor says it appeared to be a random, unprovoked attack.

The chief says the sergeant fired the fatal shot.

The sergeant was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released later Saturday.

Police declined to release his name.
