No verdict after 5 days of deliberations at El Chapo trial

February 11, 2019 - 4:58 pm

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jurors at the U.S. trial of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin ``El Chapo'' Guzman have finished their fifth day of deliberations without a verdict.

The jury sent notes to the judge on Monday asking to review law enforcement testimony about cocaine seizures and about aspects of a lengthy verdict sheet it must fill out.

The jurors are trying to reach verdicts on 10 separate counts after hearing trial testimony that lasted nearly three months.

The 61-year-old Guzman, who was extradited to the U.S. in 2017, could get life in prison if convicted of multiple drug-trafficking charges. The defense has accused prosecution cooperators of making him a scapegoat for their own crimes.

Deliberations are to resume on Tuesday.
