VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (AP) — Supporters are rallying around a single mother in suburban Long Island who said she’s the target of longstanding harassment by a neighbor who has thrown feces and dead squirrels in her yard.

“My neighbors have been racially harassing me since I purchased my home,” Jennifer McLeggan, a registered nurse with a 2-year-old daughter, said on a handwritten sign covering her front door in Valley Stream. McLeggan told WABC it began with complaints about her unkempt yard and escalated into something more sinister.

McLeggan, who is Black, said the white man next door has told her to “go back to where I came from,” had his friends spit on her yard, has taken a blow torch to her house at night and has said she can be “erased.”

She posted several videos taken from her windows showing a man tossing something onto her yard and walking around with various guns. She said police told her they can’t make an arrest unless she is harmed. Twitter and Instagram posts about the situation over the weekend prompted supporters to plan a protest on Thursday.

Police met with McLeggan in her home on Monday.

“Nassau County will not tolerate any resident being harassed or intimidated because of who they are or what they look like,” County Executive Laura Curran said in a statement. “We take these allegations seriously, and Nassau County PD is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.”
