NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has stirred controversy by asserting on Instagram live that “The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border and that is exactly what they are. They are concentration camps.”

Ocasio-Cortez is referring to detention facilities where the U.S. government is holding undocumented immigrants seeking asylum.

The assertion elicited blowback from the GOP, including a tweet from Rep. Liz Cheney which begged AOC to “spend just a few minutes learning the history of the World War II genocide.”

AOC responded, “since you’re so eager to ‘educate me,’ I’m curious: What do YOU call building mass camps of people being detained without a trial? How would you dress up DHS’s mass separation of thousands of  children at the border from their parents?

The acting head of ICE Mark Morgan called Ocasio-Cortez’s comments “completely inappropriate, reckless, irresponsible and misinformed.”
