AOC at Queens town hall: Trump agenda about 'ethnicity and racism'

July 20, 2019 - 5:26 pm

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took aim at President Trump on Saturday, six days after the president suggested several representatives should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.”

At a town hall with her constituents in Corona, Queens, AOC said the president’s agenda wasn’t about immigration but about “ethnicity and racism.”

“All you need to do is hear what the president did this week to know this is not about immigration at all. Because once you start telling American citizens to quote 'go back to your own countries,' this tells you that this president's policies are not about immigration, it's about ethnicity and racism,” she said, according to CNN.

Trump’s “go back” tweet last Sunday set off a wave of controversy. Although he didn’t mention anyone by name, it’s believed he was aiming at the four minority congresswomen of “the squad”—Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley—three of whom were born in the U.S.

AOC said Trump’s “biggest mistake” was that he “said the quiet part aloud.”

“We know that he's been thinking this the entire time,” she added. “But he's been keeping it in here. And this week, it went out here.”
