NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The effort to keep marijuana smokers out of jail is ramping up in New York City.

A rally was held at the National Action Network in Harlem on Saturday morning where the Rev. Al Sharpton said, more black and Latino residents are being arrested than white people, and called for decriminalization.

He was joined by City Council Speaker Corey Johnson who supports the idea.

"We're saying that people need to stop being arrested, and people if you -- until we can handle this legislatively, just write them a summons, don't send them to Rikers Island," Johnson said.
