NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The man, who legend has it, knew he wanted to be a meteorologist when he was 5, is retiring.

AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams has spent 40 of his 51 years as a forecaster with 1010 WINS.

Abrams is familiar to radio audiences in Boston, Charlotte, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and beyond.

He signed off WINS one last time on Friday morning with light snow moving out of the area, but more on the way over the weekend.

"It's been 51 1/2 years, so I thought I might try something else," he said.

Abrams grew AccuWeather from a service geared mainly towards seasonal ski forecasts into a global weather forecasting leader that serves more than 1.5 billion people daily.
