AAA Declares 'Terrible Tuesday' As Vacationers, Commuters Hit The Road

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- They're putting the finishing touches on the Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks display.

More than 2 million spectators are expected to line the East River to watch the show on Wednesday night.

Tuesday marked getaway day for many who will be celebrating Independence Day. AAA calls it 'Terrible Tuesday' thanks to a mix of holiday getaway drivers and those trying to get home from work.

Spokeswoman Tamra Johnson said travelers they'll have to be more flexible.

"Some people may have actually made the decision to leave early, the weekend before, but then we're also tracking that weekend after," she said.

AAA estimates that nearly 47 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more for the holiday by car or plane, that's an increase of more than 5 percent since last year.
