72-year-old Bronx amputee evicted while recovering from surgery

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 72-year-old man was kicked out of his apartment by the New York City Housing Authority while recovering from surgery.

Bienvenido Martinez was evicted from his Bronx apartment of 14 years for being behind $816 in rent.

According to The Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr.  "This should not have happened to a senior citizen in such a dire time."

NYCHA apparently thought the apartment was abandoned, although they received a call from a case worker at Martinez's rehab facility saying he would be returning to the apartment.

"This is NYCHA showing how thoughtless and heartless they are.” Diaz said.

All of Martinez's belongings were thrown away in the trash by NYCHA while he was away in the rehab facility.

"We are unable to comment on individual residents' lease agreements, however we will work with the resident to restore his tenancy." says NYCHA spokeswoman Barbara Brancaccio.
