NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Seven suspects are now in custody in the deadly stabbing of a 15-year-old in the Bronx which was apparently a case of mistaken identity.

As 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reported, long lines of mourners filed into the Ortiz Funeral Home – some chanting, “Justice for Junior,” or, “No more gun violence.”

Leandra Feliz was asked how she wanted her son remembered.

“Like he was all the time – a sweet kid; lovely kind, and good, and with very good heart,” she said.

Earlier, dozens of people spent the night adding balloons and candles to a growing memorial for Lesandro as they got word that 19-year-old Kevin Alvarez of the Bronx has been charged with murder.

“My heart is broke, it’s really broke,” said Lesandro’s father, Lissandro Guzman. “Thank you for everybody here.”

"He was only 15-years-old, he was a baby you know, and I put myself in his mother's shoes because I have a son myself. It's heartbreaking, I'm shocked," one woman said.

Alvarez was arraigned Monday evening, and pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter, assault, and gang assault.

He is accused of dragging Lesandro from the store and, along with the other suspects, stabbing and slashing him with knives and machetes.

Alvarez was to return to court on Friday, and a grand jury will be convened for a possible indictment. He is now being held without bail, 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported.

Alvarez’s attorney did not request bail, but did request medical attention for unspecified reasons, and protective custody.

The Bronx DA says six other alleged gang members were taken into custody in Paterson.

Jose Muniz, 21, of Paterson, Jose Taverez, 21, Manuel Rivera, 18, Danel Fernandez, 21, and Santiago Rodriguez, 24, of the Bronx were arrested along with Joniki Martinez, 24, of Freeport.

The suspects arrested in Paterson could be extradited as soon as Tuesday, and could be in court for arraignment in the Bronx Tuesday night, Rincon reported. They are all facing the exact same charges as Alvarez.

The victim's mother earlier spoke from her home on Bathgate Avenue.

"Thank God they were caught, it's good because they have to pay. I want my son back. If they can give me the life of my son I'd be happy," she said.

A funeral for Lesandro is planned for Wednesday.

There's also word of a similar attack in the Bronx just days before Lesandro's murder.

Cops told the New York Post that 14-year-old boy was set upon near the Bronx River Parkway by a group of men who stabbed him. He's in critical condition. One suspect has been charged, but cops can't say if it's related to the Guzman-Feliz killing.
