NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The lives of two little girls were tragically cut short after a fire tore through an apartment building in Brooklyn on Saturday night, police said.

Payton Gomez, 7, and Haley Harris, 9, were with their 53-year-old grandfather when the fire broke out at the building on Schaefer Street around 11 p.m., according to police.

The inferno started on the second floor, but flames were pouring from the building’s windows by the time firefighters arrived, video shows.

Firefighters were able to pull the girls from the burning building and perform CPR on them, but to no avail. They were pronounced dead at Wyckoff Hospital, according to police.

The girls’ grandfather was also taken to Wyckoff Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Two other people suffered minor injuries in the inferno.

By Sunday morning, the building was a burned-out shell with its windows broken out.

Lenny, who works at a local school, looked on at the destruction.

“It’s very sad,” he said. “To see things like that is terrible.”

It’s not yet known what caused the deadly blaze. The NYC Fire Marshall and Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
