2 NJ teens escape detention center, crash stolen car after police chase

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police say two New Jersey teens that escaped from a youth detention center crashed into a utility pole after leading them on a chase in a stolen vehicle.

The pursuit began at approximately 2:25 a.m. on Tuesday in Cedar Grove after an officer attempted to stop the vehicle a 17-year-old Newark boy and a 13-year-old from Camden were in police say.

Officials say they briefly pulled over, but the driver fled as the officer got out of his cruiser.

The crash occurred a short time later and the two youths fled the scene police say.

Police were able to capture the 13-year-old at a nearby home, but the older teen remains at large.

The teens escaped the Green Residential Community Home, which is on the grounds of Ringwood state park, early Sunday.

The center houses up to 20 nonviolent offenders between the ages of 13 and 18.
