2 Killed, 2 Arrested In 5-Car Pileup On The Nassau Expressway

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Two people were killed, and five others were injured in a five-car pileup on the Nassau Expressway near Kennedy Airport, Wednesday morning.

Two drivers were arrested in connection with the crash, with drunk driving as a possible cause, 1010 WINS reported. The two people were killed were riding in one of the other cars.

The crash happened in Inwood on the Nassau, Queens border.

One of the cars involved burst into flames. There was no word on the cause of the crash, but dense fog in the area may have played a role, 1010 WINS reported.

Detective Lieutenant Richard LeBrun of the Nassau Police Department said the number of cars, the dense fog, and rain made it difficult to figure out what happened.

"The debris field appears to be about 700 or 800 feet long. All of our homicide detectives are here," he said.

LeBrun said it could be a drunk driving case, but it's not clear what was going on -- if it was a chain reaction crash or the result of a chase or race.
