NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Jose Muniz, one of the five men recently convicted in the murder of Lesandro “Junior” Guzman Feliz, attacked and injured a male correction officer Tuesday night according to reports.

"He's accused of punching a correction officer in his face. And attacking him and kicking him and dislocating his shoulder and fracturing his back," Union President Elias Husamudeen said. "I don't think I can get any more graphic. That's what he did."

Two violent attack incidents within a 24-hour period prompted The Correction Officer's Benevolent Association to discuss safety for its members at a news conference outside Rikers Island Wednesday afternoon.

Husamudeen says Muniz's attack was unprovoked and major changes need to be made since inmates know that if they attack an officer in jail, the punishment is very leniant.

"For the corrections and these people that are making these rules seem to think that we're running some type of day care center. We're not running a day care center. "

Moments before attacking the officer, Muniz allegedly told him "I have nothing to lose".

On Wednesday morning, authorities say a female correction officer was strangled by a mentally ill inmate who is behind bars for rape.

According to ABC 7, Davlos Raphael, a sex offender awaiting trial for rape, allegedly lured a female officer, wrapped a shirt around the officer's neck, dragging her to ground and choked her.

The detainees in the housing area reportedly came to the officer's aid, punching Davlos to get him off the officer.

Both officers were treated, and the female officer remains hospitalized.
