16-year-old charged with murder following double stabbing of NJ kids

NEWARK N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Police arrested and charged a 16-year-old with murder after the double stabbing of a 15-year-old boy and his younger brother in New Jersey on Wednesday.

According to Essex County prosecutors, the teen, whos name they did not release, fatally stabbed Elijah Alvarez and his 11-year-old brother after breaking into their home on Park Avenue in Newark on Tuesday.

Alvarez was fatally stabbed and his younger victim was expected to make afull recovery.

Both of them attend Barringer High School but it is not known if the suspect knew the the brothers.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims’ family and the community, and for a speedy recovery of the younger brother," Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement.

Officials said in a statement that the prosecutor's office is expected to try the suspect as an adult.

The teen was charged with felony murder, attempted murder, burglary, and unlawful possession of a weapon officials say.
