CINCINNATI, OH (1010 WINS) -- An 11-year-old girl was shot with a Taser stun gun by a cop who accused her of shoplifting from a grocery store.

Police say the incident happened Monday night at a Kroger in Cincinnati when an officer approached the girl who appeared to be using a backpack to steal items from the store. Officials say the girl resisted and attempted to flee the scene before she was tasered.

The child was transported to Cincinnati Children's Hospital before being released to a guardian and she has since been charged with theft and obstruction of justice.

The Cincinnati Police Chief has opened an investigation regarding the matter, though tasers are permitted to be used on people that are 7 years of age and older according to his department's policy.
